I first ventured up to Door County for a weekend following the wedding of some co-workers that was held in Oshkosh. I was so taken with the place that I started an annual, or near-annual, weekend pilgrimage back to “The Door.”
However, this was not a typical Door County vacation. It was usually timed around the daylight savings weekend in the Fall to maximize that extra hour. I wasn’t going up for festivals or to be with all the people. Rather, these were more contemplative journeys.
If I was lucky, I could take in some Fall colors, though often, the season had already peaked. What I did find was, frequently, peacefulness. Most of the crowds had passed. Many places were already starting to close up for the winter.
But what didn’t close was the shoreline. These trips were often about driving up the shoreline roads to find little spots to stop, sit on the shore, and take in the sights and sounds of the crashing Fall waves.
Often cold, but invigorating, especially taking in the rising sun over the waters at Baileys Harbor, one of my favorite spots. What started as snapshots back in those days, has now extended to photographic explorations.
