“Grate Photography” originated out of a tongue-in-cheek play on words based on every photographer’s desire to create “great photography.”
It became an exploration of the common and mostly unnoticed storm & sewer grates, and expanded to include ventilation and other types of grates.
Initially, I grabbed photos of these when I was out and about, as a purely secondary action to whatever else I was photographing. Many were captured just on my phone. And many were taken as part of a wider scene because I hadn’t even formulated a vision of how these photos would be used or processed at the start.

I wanted to present these objects in a unique and new light. They became close, sectional shots, pulling down the exposure, but then punching through with a highlight to pull out textural detail and colors.
